Interlibrary Loan: What is Interlibrary Loan?

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service allows us to borrow materials that we do not have in our collection, such as books, copies of journal articles, and book chapters from other libraries throughout the country or worldwide.

A current Clinton College student, faculty or staff member can make a request. We will identify libraries with the desired item, place the request, receives the item, notify the requestor of its arrival, and make it available for pick up, as well as arrange for its return. The lending library usually sets the due date and overdue fees of the material borrowed.

General Guidelines for Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Typically, ILL items are free of charge. However, if the lending library assesses a fee, the borrower will be given the option of paying the fee or canceling the request.

The requestor is responsible for any charges resulting from the loss or damage of materials borrowed. Requests for books normally take 1-3 weeks to fill and copies of journal articles and book chapters usually are received within 5-7 days but may be longer.

Borrowers: Faculty/staff may have up to 5 active interlibrary loan requests at any one time. While Students may have up to 3 active interlibrary loan requests at any one time.

Generally, libraries do not lend the following materials through Interlibrary Loan: textbooks, entire journal issues, newspapers, videos, reference materials, reserve materials, and high-demand, rare, or fragile materials.

***Please be sure you have first checked our library catalog for the item you are seeking. Interlibrary Loan requests cannot be made for items that we have in our catalog.
